a few of my favorite things

image

I was the only one in the family who never wore a watch.  My father, uncle and brother would sooner have left the apartment without their shoes.

Grandma’s wristwatch was always set five minutes ahead; the magical talisman that kept her punctual all her life.

About ten years ago I spotted the watch in the photo above in a SoHo jewelry shop, and had to have it. The owner was a business acquaintance, and I got a real deal on it.  When do I wear it? When I’m feeling special  – know what I mean?

My very first cellular phone.  And I didn’t even want one at the time, can you believe it?

My Grandmother spoke to my Uncle Peter for the last time on this phone, so it has a special place in my treasure box.

I wear jewelry about once every two years.  When I do I love big glitzy pieces.  These dragonflies are my favorites.

My dear friend Lissa had this pin hand-painted as a surprise for me.  The artist used a baby photo of my daughter Josephine.   My baby turned 29 on the 30th of April.

Sync is a four letter word around here tonight

I can not and will not sync another thing.  First thing tomorrow morning I am at Staples buying an old-fashioned five subject notebook with pockets and tabs. And you can type that into whatever web-based or mobile app you got thank you very much.

Those of you who read this blog know I am a die-hard gadget junkie, but there are some things I just have to do with good ole pen and paper.

With that decided I can now take a few deep breathes, close my eyes, and take a walk within.

The Perfect Family Movie

If you asked me what I was expecting before I saw the film the answer would have been another Serial Mom.

Kathleen Turner stars as Catholic Woman of the Year nominee Eileen Cleary. She has a husband is in AA, a son who left his wife for the local manicurist, and a pregnant lawyer daughter whose marrying the woman of her dreams. Eileen is determined that they all become her version of the perfect family. They beg to differ.

I think many others will enter thinking comedy, but this movie like City Island and life in general, is a dramedy.

After the film, many audience members commented about how good it was to see Kathleen back on the screen.

Kudos Kathleen for a great performance, and lesson or two about acceptance and honesty.

Finding the Fun

Dinner was a salad as suggested by my dear friend Janie.  We had a long lovely phone chat this evening, while I sat watching all the squirrels mating in Madison Square Park.  The tourists had a ball snapping pics of that action.

Janie has lost 165 pounds since last year. She is very modest and not at all preachy about her accomplishment.  And that is rare.  She is giving me a lot of support with my healthier eating goals and everything that’s going on.  I love you Janie.  Thank you.

I bought myself some fun readers at Burlington today. Four big bucks.

I also picked up some capris, but not my usual black. Nope. I went with a distressed sort of denim. You know the kind the kids wear with the wide white stitching.

Hey, I told you I was taking the NaBloPoMo theme for May – FUN - seriously.

Let’s all make a little time for fun every day okay?

Much bloglove to you all.

Preparing to Submerge

At Chelsea’s Clearview Cinema waiting for the 3pm showing of The Perfect Family.  Every theater should have a little coffeebar like this one, somewhere to sip a latte, and prepare to submerge yourself into someone else’s dream.

This past week was rough – really rough.  I was so tired last night that I passed out without greating the Supermoon at 11:35.

Next week the spouse is having medical tests, and it’s all very overwhelming.  When he took sick at the beginning of February, it was totally out of nowhere, and I got everything that needed to be done – done.  It’s only now weeks later that I’m realizing just how sick he was, and how he’s held up under a slow and very painful recovery.  Same thing happened with Josie’s cancer; I was on autopilot for months.  All day long I took care of everything, and all through the night I dreamed that buildings were falling down all around and on me.

These days I find I am much more forgiving of angry or confused folks in public places.  The ones screaming for a manager over a nickel, or making citizen’s arrests at the supermarket because someone is at the ten items or less checkout with 12 items.  I think to myself Maybe they or someone close to them is sick.

I’m going to go lose myself in the movie now.

It’s nice to know you’ll be here when I return.

Let’s Dance ‘Cause It’s Saturday Night on the Subway

So how are all of you?

I’m somewhere near the Lowery Street stop on the 7 line.  I know because that giant red neon cross just flashed by the subway car window.  If I ever open up my own coffeebar I think I’ll sit a big ole blue neon heart on top of it.

The young man to my right has those rings in his earlobes.  You know the kind that stretch the lobe, so the hoop has a circle of flesh around it.  I have a love-hate relationship with that look.  While I applaud the guts and patience it takes to achieve it; I still ask myself Why ever would anyone want this?  Whenever I see it.

The young man in front of me is reading an old-fashioned magazine.  About half the people on this train are playing with some sort of electronic device.

This is when I want to stand up and ask if anyone is blogging.

I just can’t be the only one.

You know one night at Starbucks two  college age girls began the registration process at WordPress.com, and it was all I could do to stay in my seat.  I wanted to rush over and help. A blog was coming into existence before my very eyes. Yes, I know I’m blog crazy – any other big news.

I’m on the uptown 1 train.  A man is dancing wildly to the music on his IPod.  People are moving out of his way.  The train is packed, but he is unaware, he is the dance.

I managed to get a pic, but he’s moving so fast he’s a blur.

Here’s my stop.

Til later.

Oh how I love a great old movie…

Watching Lana Turner in Madame X.  Talk about your glamour girls; she was so old school Hollywood.

Years back I read everything available about yesteryear’s Queens of the Screen.  Turner’s real life was as colorful as her cinematic one.  Her teen-age daughter murdered Lana’s abusive mobster boyfriend.

I loved Lana, but she was not my #1 favorite.  My top spot was shared by Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.

Just about every movie those two made is on my greats list.

My clothes horse days are far behind me; my need for comfort too great.  But I do love how each scene brings another perfectly put together ensemble.  Hats, gloves, heels, bags, accessories to die for.  **sigh

Ah the trial is about to start.  Gotta get out a hankie for this.

Ciao for now.

The Perfect Family | Now In Select Theaters & On Demand

http://www.theperfectfamilymovie.com/

I’ve been waiting a year for this one.

No doubt seeing this in Chelsea this weekend is going to be fun.

I promised myself that I would set aside some time for fun every day in honor of the NaBloPoMo theme for May.

The last couple of days have presented a challenge, because of all the nitpickers and nickel and dimers that presented themselves.  Guess they think I won’t shop around for better prices.  They are so guessing wrong.

Gotta scoot.

Back at you later.
