introducing Spatz Donovan
While I was strolling around downtown New York I stopped in at:

In additon to the schedule I had the pleasure of meeting song and dance man Mr. Sptaz Donovan.
As you’ll see from this You Tube he’s worked with some pretty popular folks.

everything from cereal to Cartier – an afternoon at Costco
Today my good chum and I decided snowbound was not our style, especially when they just got new wheels. So we hopped in and rolled.
This car has a camera that lets you see what’s behind you when you’re doing the parking thing. That used to be my job. Guess I won’t be be waving my pocketbook frantically to guide them in anymore.
After lunch, we were so busy talking I didn’t take a pic, we decided to hit Costco. Manhattan’s one and only is on East 116th Street near the FDR drive.
This box store is a consumer wonderland for born and bred Manhattanites like me. They’ve got everything.
In magically large sizes for really low prices.
Everything from a 30 pack of cold cereal to a $1800 Tag Heuer was on one floor. And that watch was not the most expensive jewelry there; they’ve got Cartier too.
One thing they don’t have is shopping bags. Fortunately we had bought a box of kitchen size trash bags. They came in handy for dividing up and lugging stuff.
RE: Friday the 13th
Not only does 2012 have three Friday the 13ths, 13 weeks apart from each other, but it’s also a leap year. And I have decided that’s only going to make this year even luckier for me.
Here’s some interesting bits for you:
- If you fear Friday the 13th then you are considered a triskaidekaphobe.
- Jack the Ripper, Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, Theodore Bundy and Albert De Salvo all have 13 letters in their names. It is said if your name has 13 letters then yours will be the luck of the devil.
- Many airports airports do not have a gate 13. Hospitals and hotels usually avoid having a room 13, and most high-rise buildings don’t have a 13th floor.
- Popular rapper Tupac Shakur died on Friday the 13th.
- Four of the 12 movies in the Friday the 13th franchise were released on Friday the 13th; the original (1980), the sequel (1981) and the 2009 remake.
- Famous folks born on Friday the 13th include: Fidel Castro, Margaret Thatcher, Butch Cassidy, Samuel Beckett (Irish writer), and actors Christopher Plummer, Bob Crane, Don Adams, and Steve Buscemi.
- The US Seal has 13 stars, bars, feathers in the eagle’s tail, 13 bars in one claw, 13 olive branches in the other. On the USA Dollar Bill, there are 13 steps on the pyramid, 13 bars on the shield, and 13 leaves on the olive branch.
- Speaking of money the words E Pluribus Unum has 13 letters.
- In Ancient Greece Zeus was counted as the 13th and most powerful God.
- The number 13 was considered lucky in acient Egypt; the symbolic last step in the ladder of life was the thirteenth.
- You get one extra when you have a bakers dozen – 13.
- There are 13 full moons in a year. And you know the moon and I have a special thing going on.

Mud bricks & a raised rice-grass roof are the golden secret, the formula 1 of quality of living in hot, and monsoon rainy Tamil Nadu villages.
The bricks are left to bake dry in the sun. No extra energy or labor is wasted to kiln burn them.
These create a thick wall, as you can see in the doorway’s cross section.
The roof is raised about a foot all around and hovering this way it allows hot, humid or smokey air to escape while letting in daylight in an omni ambiance that is easy on the eyes.
The roof is first laid with weaved coconut palms that create a decorative and crumbs-free ceiling then it is laid with bunches of rice-grass, the left over from paddy fields harvest.
The benefits of this traditional building technology are immense. And I had stayed, slept and ate in these homes to tell their legacy compared with modern day Tamil concrete ‘cubicles’.
In summer months every one in a village knows that they should be visiting their relatives who kept their mud house. Those who are not lucky enough can be seen seated outside their front doors around noon and till early evening, waiting for the concrete and cement block walls to cool down.
The casual power-cuts are another time when those who tossed away tradition are left gazing in the dark.
So, why did they ever level their mud houses? For one, the Tamil govt. gives low-income families a fat grant to build a cement house and second is the roof maintenance that has to be replaced about once in 6-10 years at about the cost of 6 month household’s income.
Some say fire can catch easily, either from cooking or from an evil neighbor. However homes that stand for 60 years testify the chances, say others.
